Tariff Pause Offers a Brief Reprieve

Apr 14, 2025
President Trump has announced a 90-day pause on broad-based tariffs, while simultaneously increasing tariffs on Chinese imports. For the restaurant and hospitality industry, this temporary delay does not mean we’re in the clear. If anything, it introduces more uncertainty into an already volatile economic environment.
Uncertainty Is the Real Threat
The biggest challenge we face isn’t just the tariffs—it’s the unpredictable policy shifts. The start-stop nature of this administration’s economic strategy makes it incredibly difficult for business owners to plan. When operators can’t forecast pricing, sourcing, or demand with any certainty, it leads to:
- Delayed investments
- Postponed hiring decisions
- Hesitancy to expand or upgrade operations
For an industry built on tight margins and long lead times, this kind of volatility isn’t just frustrating—it’s paralyzing.
A 90-Day Window to Prepare
While the pause might delay price increases or supply disruptions for some, now is the time to get proactive. Restaurant owners and operators should use the next three months to critically examine:
- Food costs – Are there opportunities to diversify sourcing or renegotiate supplier agreements?
- Labor efficiency – Can shifts, scheduling, and staffing models be fine-tuned to control rising costs?
- Operational expenses – What systems or processes can be optimized to reduce waste and improve profitability?
Strategic Readiness Is Key
We don’t know what will happen after the 90-day window closes. But if tariffs do take effect—especially those targeting key imports like seafood, produce, or kitchen equipment—restaurants that have planned ahead will be better positioned to absorb the shock.
Let’s not mistake this pause for a solution. It’s a signal to prepare. As always, the Louisiana Restaurant Association is here to help our members navigate what’s next—whatever that may be.
