Louisiana Senate Approves Repeal of Minor Break Law

On Tuesday, the Louisiana Senate approved House Bill 156, which repeals a requirement that employers provide a mandatory 30-minute break to minors working shifts lasting five hours or longer, in a 26-11 vote, with a major amendment now attached to the legislation.
The amendment to the bill is from from Sen. Jean-Paul Coussan and preserves the mandatory break for workers under 16 years of age, meaning the new break rules would only apply to 16 and 17-year-olds.
Because the bill was amended, it now heads back to the Louisiana House of Representatives for approval before it can be signed into law by Governor Jeff Landry.
According to Sen. Alan Seabaugh, the intent of the legislation is to remove penalties and fines for employers in the event that minors clock in from their breaks early, which some business owners say is a deterrent for them to hire minors.
